Kojima Sohonten was founded in 1597. The brewery entered longstanding relations with the Uesugi clan during and after the Edo period, becoming one of the few brewers to continue operations even in the middle of famine in 1603. The Kojima family were treated as shizoku (samurai). Toko Sake Museum emerged in 1984, becoming the largest brewery exhibition in Tohoku.
