Sparkling Sakes for Mother's Day — and Why They Start Conversations

Mother's Day is Sunday, May 17th this year, and I want to suggest something a little different for your toast.

Skip the mimosa. Skip the rosé wine. Go for the sparkling sake instead!

Here's why I'm so sure about this: every time I've poured sparkling sake at a gathering, someone asks "what is this?" And that's always a fun way we start a conversation. I hope that with you and your mom, too!

A bottle that starts a conversation is the best kind of gift. Even if you cannot physically be with “mom”

Today I'm sharing three sparkling sakes I'd happily put on any Mother's Day brunch table — at three different price points, for three different kinds of celebrations.

1. Mio Sparkling Sake — The Easy, Joyful One

If your mom doesn't usually drink sake, start here.

Mio is light, gently sweet, and incredibly approachable (closer to a sparkling cocktail or desert wine) than what most people picture when they hear "sake." It's only about 5% alcohol.

How I'd serve it: Chilled, in champagne flutes, alongside dessert. It's especially beautiful with anything fruity!  Fruit Tart, Strawberry short cake, etc.  This is the bottle for the mom who says "I don't really like sake." She'll love this. Trust me!

2. Ichido Rosé Sparkling — The Showstopper Aperitif

If you want something that looks as good as it tastes, this is it.

Ichido Rosé Sparkling has a gorgeous natural pink color (no food coloring — that hue comes from a special variety of red rice) and a lightly sweet, elegant flavor. It's the kind of bottle that makes people stop and say "oh, that's pretty" before they've even tasted it.

How I'd serve it: As an aperitif, before the meal even starts. Pour it the moment your mom walks in the door. Pair it with light bites — prosciutto and melon, soft cheeses, smoked salmon canapés.

This is the bottle for a Mother's Day where you've actually planned things. Where there's a tablecloth. Where photos will be taken.

3. AWA sake (Bottle-Fermented) — The Serious One
Hakkaisan AWA & Nanbu Bijin AWA

For the mom who appreciates the real thing — or for a milestone Mother's Day worth marking — I recommend a true AWA sake.

AWA sake is sparkling sake made using the traditional méthode champenoise — yes, the same secondary bottle fermentation used to make Champagne. It's complex, dry, refined, and unmistakably special.

Here's what most people don't know: AWA sake only became an officially recognized category in 2020. To celebrate the Olympic with Japanese bubbles.  But the brewers behind it had to solve a problem that took years to crack — fermenting sake inside a bottle without the bottle exploding from the pressure.

So when you pour an AWA sake on Mother's Day, you're not just pouring a fancy bottle. You're pouring a piece of Japanese craft history that's barely six years old.

How I'd serve it: Cold, I prefer in proper wine glasses (not flutes — you want the aroma to open up). With a real meal — raw oysters, smoked salmon crêpes, quiche lorraine…. anything elegant. Or honestly, just on its own as a moment.

This one costs more than the others. But trus me, it's worth it. This is the bottle I bring when I want to say I really thought about this.

A Quick Story

Last Mother's Day, a customer came back to tell me she'd brought Mio to her mom's brunch and her mom — who'd been "off sake forever" since a bad college experience — had two glasses and asked where to buy more.

That's the thing with sparkling sake. It rewrites the story. It gets people who thought they didn't like sake to discover they actually do — they just needed a nice guidance.

If you've got a mom in your life who fits that description, this might be the year… wink wink
